Stargardt Disease

Stargardt Disease

Stargardt disease is an inherited eye disease. It is a form of juvenile macular dystrophy that develops in children, teenagers and young adults.

The disease causes blurry central vision, and makes colors appear less bright. While Stargardt disease cannot be treated and cured currently, there are several gene therapy and drug therapy trials underway. Genetic testing may help you find a current trial to take part in.

There are things people with Stargardt disease should do to avoid further vision loss. These include wearing sunglasses for UV eye protection, and not smoking or being around cigarette smoke. They should also avoid large doses of vitamin A.

People who have Stargardt disease may find low vision resources helpful.
